Water Conservation

There has been a considerable increase in the consumption a water over the years. It is therefore in the interest of mankind to conserve water. Water conservation is the careful use and protection of water resources. Maximum amount of water is used in agriculture, for domestic needs and industries.

Conservation of Water for Agriculture Use:

Agriculture in the largest user of water. About 80% of the total fresh water is used for this purpose. There could be tremendous saving by using the following procedures.

  • Reduce seepage and evaporation of the water by using lined or covered
  • Use computer monitoring and scheduled release for maximum efficiency.
  • Irrigate when evaporation loss in minimum, for example at night or early
  • If it is possible, use much plant around to retain water.
  • Grow crops that need less water.

Conservation of Water Domestic use:

Nearly 10 per cent of the total fresh water is used for domestic purposes. This can be considerably reduced by the following practice.

  • Use more efficient bathroom fixtures, such as low flush toilets that required 5 gal per flush rather than the standard 5 gal per flush toilet.
  • Use shower-heads that deliver less but sufficient water.
  • Turn off water when not needed for washing, brushing teeth, shaving etc.
  • Flush the toilet only when necessary
  • All leaks should be fixed at the earliest
  • Using dish washers or washing machines can reduce water consumption
  • Water lawns and plants in early morning, or at night to reduce evaporation
  • Use drip irrigation and place water holding mulch around garden plants.

Conservation of Water Industrial use:

The use of water can be decreased by restoring to in-plant treatment and recycling of water.
